The Peel Cup (Chicago)

Maintained by David Litterer spectrum@sover.net The Peter J. Peel Challenge Cup was for many years one of the oldest soccer trophies in the United States. It recognizes the Illinois State Champion, and for many years the champion has come from the National Soccer League of Chicago. Originally the competition was intended for providing a benefit fund for players requiring medical aid. With Chicago one of the major centers of soccer in the first half of the century, the Peel Cup championship was significant, and many of the winners enjoyed great success in the National Amateur Up and the US Open Cup competitions. The Peel cup was retired in 1970 upon the death of Mr. Peel, and replaced with the Govenor’s Cup.
